The world is looking intensely at Asia today not only as the world's largest producer, but more importantly, as the most important consumer. While marketers everywhere are keen to know how to ride on the "Asian Consumer Wave", our panel will focus on the driving force of the evolution of consumer behavior in Asia over the last decade. With numerous consumer brands scrambling to capture the attention of the increasingly sophisticated Asian consumers, our panel will also explore the competition between international and local brands in Asia, and the implications of the rapid transformation of the consumer and retail sector.

Radha Chadha is one of Asia's leading marketing and consumer insights experts. She is the author of The Cult of the Luxury Brand: Inside Asia's Love Affair with Luxury, which ranked #3 on amazon.com's best-selling new releases in its category.

After working with leading advertising agencies JWT, Ogilvy & Mather, Grey Worldwide, and Bates Asia, Radha established her own brand consultancy - Chadha Strategy Consulting - in 2000 in Hong Kong. She has held senior strategic planning positions, and has led the thinking on brands such as American Express, HSBC, British Airways and Mandarin Oriental.

She has worked on assignments in various Asian markets, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, and India.

Radha has a keen interest in brand education and has held seminars for Stanford University, Tsinghua University in Beijing, and the ESSEC-IIMA Luxury Management Program at Ahmedabad.

She is a popular speaker - her engagements include Tiffany New York, Hugo Boss Germany, JP Morgan Luxury CEO Conference Paris, World Luxury Congress London, and the China Luxury Summit Shanghai.

She has an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a BA in Math from St. Stephen's College, New Delhi.

With a proven track record in business planning and development, Assistant Vice-President and Planning, Projects, and Management Staff Group Head Maria Soledad "Toy" Olives has centered her work on achieving significant competitive advantage by developing clear business strategies and improving productivity.

Twenty-five years in San Miguel has sharply honed Toy's planning abilities, thus allowing her to successfully take up challenging roles. She joined San Miguel right out of college and was immediately assigned to the Food Division as Industrial Engineer and Systems Analyst for the Feeds Business, where she also rose to become the Planning and Information Systems Manager. She was eventually assigned to various businesses involving the commodity businesses ( Animal and Aquatic Feeds, Integrated Poultry Operations and Pork and Beef Operations) of the group worked her way up and became Planning Manager for the Feeds and Poultry Businesses in Luzon. After proving her strength and expertise in business planning and development, she was appointed Business Planning and Information Systems Manager for Monterey Foods Corporation where she spearheaded major profitability initiatives for the meat company. As Manager and Head of the Division Planning, Projects and Management Staff Group, Toy is presently tasked to drive the transformation of the Food Group into an learning organization to improve profitability, accelerate revenue growth, harnesses synergies within the company, and focuses on process improvements to drive efficiencies and strengthen customer focus.

Toy is a graduate of BS Industrial Management Engineering, minor in Chemical Engineering from the De La Salle University in Manila. She also underwent the Management Development Program at the Asian Institute of Management.

Ray Hatoyama

COO, Sanrio, Inc.

Ray Hatoyama is the Chief Operating Officer of Sanrio, Inc., a world-wide designer and distributor of character-branded stationery, school supplies, gifts, and accessories. Sanrio, Inc., is the wholly owned subsidiary of Sanrio Co., Ltd., and is headquartered in South San Francisco, CA. Sanrio, Inc. distributes products throughout North, Central and South America.

Mr. Hatoyama's previous experiences include Vice President of U.S. operation at Elephant Design Co., Ltd., Assistant Manager at Mitsubishi Corporation, Project Manager at Avex Network, Business Consultant at Sanrio Co., Ltd., Planning Manager at Lawson, Inc., Sales Manager at Memory-Tech Corporation, and analyst at Globespan Capital Partners.

Mr. Hatoyama received his MBA from Harvard Business School and was also formerly a Co-Chair for the Asia Business Conference during his time there.

Elie Ofek

Elie Ofek (Moderator)

Professor, Harvard Business School

Elie Ofek is a Professor in the Marketing unit at Harvard Business School. At HBS he teaches an MBA elective and an Exec-Ed course on the relationship between Marketing and Innovation. In the past he taught the required first year MBA course in marketing.

Elie's research focuses on new product strategies in fast-changing, technology-driven business environments. In particular, he explores interactions between R&D and marketing decisions, and is particularly interested in how firms integrate marketing input when formulating innovation strategy. He also examines the implications of information technology and new media on product/content offerings.

He received his Ph.d. in Business from Stanford University and also holds an M.A. in Economics (Stanford University) and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (Technion). Prior to entering academics, he worked as a development engineer in the audio/video multimedia division at an IBM research center.
