Southeast Asia, with some 580 million inhabitants and a combined GDP of US$1.5 trillion, is one of the biggest yet most underrated markets in the world. Rich in resources and human capital, its member states are also disparate in wealth and political stability. With the emergence of China and India as Asia’s engines of growth, ASEAN has recently made a renewed push towards a single, seamless economic zone to compete for its fair share of investments. Going forward, what are some of the opportunities and challenges for individuals and companies looking to do business in ASEAN?

H.E. Dr. Chan Heng Chee

H.E. Dr. Chan Heng Chee

Ambassador to the U.S., Singapore

H.E. Dr. Chan Heng Chee is the Ambassador of Singapore to the United States. She has served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and was concurrently High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to Mexico. She took up her post as Ambassador to the United States in July 1996. Ambassador Chan was Founder Director of the Institute of Policy Studies and Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. She was also Founder Executive Director of the Singapore International Foundation, which created the Singapore version of the Peace Corps. Ambassador Chan served as a Member of the International Advisory Board of the Council of Foreign Relations, New York; the Council of International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), London; and the International Council of the Asia Society. She is the author of several articles and books on politics in Singapore, Southeast Asia and international security.

Patrick Walujo is co-founder and co-managing director of Northstar Equity Partners, a leading private equity fund with primary focus on Indonesia. Northstar is the Indonesian Partner of the Texas Pacific Group, one of the world’s leading private equity funds. Prior to co-founding Northstar, Mr. Walujo was Senior Vice President of Pacific Century Group in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to working at PCCW Japan, he was an associate at the investment banking division of Goldman, Sachs & Co., in London and New York. Mr. Walujo holds a B.S. from Cornell University.

Marc P. Mealy

Marc P. Mealy

Vice President, US ASEAN Business Council

Marc P. Mealy is the Vice President at the US ASEAN Business Council. At the Council, he oversees the US-Malaysia Business Committee, the US-Philippines Business Committee and the ASEAN Financial Services Working Group. Mr. Mealy started his career as an international economist with USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service. While at USDA, he was admitted into the U.S. Foreign Service and managed some of USDA's largest commodity trade finance and food assistance programs in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. He then spent four years in the U.S. Congress. From 1999 to 2001, he worked on the Professional Staff of the House International Relations Committee. From 2001 to 2003, he served as the international economic and foreign policy advisor to Congressman Gregory Meeks of New York, a member of the Asia Sub-Committee of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Financial Services Committees. Marc holds a B.A. in Economic and Third World Studies from Oberlin College and an M.S. in Economics from the University of Florida.

Dr. Jay Rosengard

Dr. Jay Rosengard

Lecturer in Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School

Jay Rosengard is Lecturer in Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. He has worked for a wide variety of multilateral and bilateral donors, as well as directly for host governments and private sector clients. Rosengard is Director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government's Financial Sector Program, which focuses on the development of bank and nonbank financial institutions and alternative financing instruments. In addition, Rosengard is a Faculty Affiliate of both the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation and the Center for International Development. He also serves as Faculty Chair of three executive programs: FIPED (Financial Institutions for Private Enterprise Development), which focuses on sustainable and effective microfinance and SME finance; COMTAX (Comparative Tax Policy and Administration), which addresses key strategic and tactical issues in tax design and implementation; and VELP (Vietnam Executive Leadership Program), which is an innovative policy dialogue with senior Vietnamese leadership.

Holly Morrow

International Adviser, ExxonMobil

Holly Morrow is ExxonMobil’s International Adviser for the Asia-Pacific, providing strategic guidance for the company on its operations in Asia. Ms. Morrow joined ExxonMobil from the US government, where she served most recently as Director for Southeast Asia at the National Security Council. She previously served as the Vice President’s Special Advisor for Asia, covering all of Asia; in various positions in the State Department’s EAP and INR bureaus working on China-related issues; and as a State Department legislative fellow in the office of Senator Dianne Feinstein. Before joining the government, Ms. Morrow worked as a Chinese-language translator for The Mao Project and as a Director in the Lhasa office of the Tibet Poverty Alleviation Fund. Ms. Morrow received her M.A. from Harvard University’s East Asian Regional Studies program, and her B.A. magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Georgetown University. She also spent a year of graduate study at the John Hopkins SAIS-Nanjing Center at Nanjing University.
