"Lessons from the Japanese Banking Crisis"
SpeakersThierry PorteResearch Associate, Program on US-Japan Relations of the Weatherhead Center and the Reischauer Institute, Harvard UniversityThierry Porte is currently resident at Harvard as a Research Associate in the Program on US-Japan Relations of the Weatherhead Center and the Reischauer Institute. He is an Operating Partner of JC Flowers & Co. LLP. He also serves as Chairman of the Japan-US Friendship Commission, an independent United States federal agency that provides support for the US-Japan relationship and as Chairman of the US-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (known as CULCON), an entity established by Prime Minister Ikeda and President Kennedy to further the US-Japan dialogue on intellectual and cultural issues. Mr. Porte served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Shinsei Bank, Limited. He joined Shinsei Bank in November 2003 and stepped down in November 2008. Prior to joining Shinsei Bank, he was a Managing Director of Morgan Stanley and served as President, Representative Director and Branch Manager of Morgan Stanley Japan. Over the course of a 22 year career at Morgan Stanley, he held various positions in capital markets, corporate finance and management in New York, London and Tokyo. Mr. Porte has been involved in a number of educational, cultural and philanthropic activities. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Trustees of the American School in Japan, President of the Harvard Club of Japan and as Chairman of the Mori Art Museum Best Friends Association. He is a member of the Harvard Business School Visiting Committee and participates in a number of Harvard boards and advisory committees. He is a director of the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Porte received a bachelor of arts degree (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) in Economics from Harvard College in 1978 and is a Baker Scholar graduate of the Harvard Business School, class of 1982.
