Asian emerging markets are currently evolving from being not only users of healthcare services but also major providers and innovators of drugs and devices. In this panel experts from big pharma, biotech and strategic investor, we will explore how this shift is impacting these countries and what are the alliances and resources the surrounding countries can look out for to make the change in the industry a business opportunity. Key questions addressed in this panel will include: (i) How has the view on serving Asian emerging markets changed over the past 5 years? (ii) How can US and other established markets continue to grasp the business needs in emerging economies? In what ways have emerging economies been able to meet their own needs? (iii) Beyond India and China what are the top one or two markets that are being targeted for foreign investment and why?
Chief Executive Officer, Hutchison Medipharma
Samantha joined Hutchison Whampoa in 2001 to lead the global pharmaceutical R&D and health care investment activities in the Group. In 2002, she founded and became the CEO of Hutchison Medipharma Limited (HMPL), a Shanghai based pharmaceutical R&D company focusing on oncology and autoimmune diseases. Dr. Du received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of Cincinnati. Prior to Hutchison, she was in Pfizer’s global strategic operation division in charge of global Licensing and related merge & acquisition activities for metabolic diseases. She started her research career at Pfizer’s Global R&D center in Connecticut and led teams that delivered multiple INDs and NDAs in several therapeutic areas.
Global Head of Cardiovascular Research for the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR)
Seigo has experience in both clinical and basic research cardiology and in overseeing large multidisciplinary programs in this area. Prior to joining Novartis in August 2003, he had served as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston and at Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. In addition, Seigo was Director of Cardiovascular Research and Physician, Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston and Director of the CardioGenomics Program. Seigo received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Tokyo, and undertook postdoctoral clinical training in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston.

Tsuney Yanagihara heads the Life Science Business Unit of Japan’s largest trading company, Mitsubishi Corporation. His businesses at Mitsubishi involve VC investments, Strategic alliances, Agent representation, and licensing. Prior to Life Science, he served post as a CEO of plastic injector manufacturing, M&A consultant for Lawson, and marketer for Brewery Machinery. He received his BA at Amherst University and MBA at Harvard Business School.

Steve’s key responsibilities as the Head of Research, Asia at Pfizer are exploring R&D capabilities of Asia countries, establishing and managing partnerships with biotech companies, academic research institutions, and R&D service providers, and developing longer term Asia R&D investment strategies. Since he joined Pfizer, Steve led a series of high impact projects in the areas of R&D strategy, post merger integration, and R&D productivity improvements. Steve received his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from UCSF, BS (Summa Cum Laude) in Biology from Michigan TechnologicalUniversity. Prior to Pfizer, Steve held positions at biotech companies consulting firm.
