In 1999, Niu Gensheng established the Inner Mongolia Meng Niu Dairy Industry (Group) Co., which has grown into the champion of China's dairy industry in only 9 years. In the CCTV "2003 Man of the Year for China Economy award" to Niu Gensheng, the remarks read, "He is an ox at a rocket speed!"
Mengniu's direct and indirect quantity of employment ranks the first in the industry, including 30,000 employees, 300,000 people sales team, more than 300 million dairy farmers, and has been called "China's biggest job-creating enterprise" in the last 10 years. In 2006, Mengniu launched "China Milk Love Action," which provided free milk to China's 1,000 poor primary schools students for a year, which has been the largest milk charity event in China. At the same time, Mengniu's annual tax payment also ranks the top in China's dairy industry.

In 2005, Niu Gensheng and his family donated all their shares from Mengniu Dairy Group to set up a charity fund. He is honored to be "The Biggest Chinese Donator around the World." The market value of the fund is over 4 billion Hongkong dollars (500 million USD).
In early 2006, Niu Gensheng resigned as the president and put more efforts into charitable causes. In 2007, the Ministry of Civil Affairs selected Niu Gensheng as "China's top 10 philanthropists."
