This panel will explore some of the influential trends from entrepreneurs’ and venture capitalists’ perspectives that influence Asian landscape. This panel will also explore opportunities and challenges presented by these trends and how entrepreneurs / venture capitalists can best use these trends to their advantages. In addition, this panel will explore venture investing in Asia: the role, characteristics and exit strategies for successful investments. Finally, it will lay out some key lessons for students who want to start their own businesses or invest in Asia.

Daniel Isenberg (Moderator)

Daniel Isenberg

Daniel Isenberg is Senior Lecturer of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School in the Entrepreneurial Management Unit, where he teaches International Entrepreneurship. Dan re-joined the HBS faculty in January 2005 after having served at HBS from 1981-1987 as Assistant Professor in the Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management Unit. In the interim 17 years Dan lived in Israel where he founded and managed Triangle Technologies, which specializes in executing cross-border transactions between Japanese companies and non-Japanese technology companies, and has concluded over 100 discrete deals (joint ventures, OEM agreements, distribution channels, strategic investments, licensing agreements, etc.). Dan’s current research and conceptual interests include the antecedents and effects of global entrepreneurship, and the psychological and economic underpinnings of entrepreneurship. His applied research interests include how to help entrepreneurial ventures identify, create, and exploit global opportunities. His full biography is available here (external website).

K. Bobby Chao

Bobby Chao

Mr. K. Bobby Chao is a Co-Founder and Managing Director at DragonVenture, a leading venture capital in the People’s Republic of China formed in partnership with Draper Fisher Jurveston. Mr. Chao manages DFJ DragonFund China 2005. Mr. Chao previously served as a General Partner for Technology Associates Management Company and has served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of VA Linux Systems. He is currently on the Board of Directors for Penguin Computing, Monte Jade Association, and Emphasis Networks in Taipei, Taiwan. Mr. Chao holds an M.S. in Physics from Georgia State University and an M.S. in Aeronautics Engineering from Stanford University. His full biography is available here (external website).

Huy Do

Huy Do

Mr. Huy Do is the Founder, Chairman and President of Vietnam Silicon Valley Network, a worldwide network of entrepreneurs, executives, inventors, investors and other professionals supporting the global Vietnamese technology business community. He was Counsel at the world’s largest law firm, Clifford Chance, specializing in intellectual property and international matters. He now dedicates much of his time to expand VSVN. Mr. Huy Do graduated from the City University of Hong Kong.

Ms. Lyric M. Hughes is the CEO and publisher of China Online, an Internet-based news and information service that provides business and economic intelligence about China. She founded China Online in January 1998, and was named one of the "25 Women of Small Business" by FORTUNE Small Business in March, 2001. The rapidly growing Chicago-based company was named in the "Internet Top 10 New Companies" listing by Inc Magazine in May, 1999. Ms. Hughes graduated from the University of Chicago, where she spent some time in Sendai, Japan as a Rotary exchange student and made her first trip to China in 1979 as a member of a delegation from the states of Illinois and Arkansas.

Satoru Iino

Mr. Satoru Iino is a Board Member for CSK VC, a leading venture capital and an incubation center in Japan. He joined CSKVC in 2000. Prior to joining CSKVC, he was with Hitachi Ltd. and Hitachi America where he developed a strong background in broad range of IT sector including computer, semiconductor, communications and information devices in terms of licensing, corporate alliance, and investment in venture companies. Mr. Iino is currently a Director of Commtouch Japan KK. He is a graduate of the University of Tokyo, where he studied Aesthetics. His full biography is available here (external website).

John J. Park

Mr. John Park is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Asia Evolution, a firm providing incubation, consulting services and capital for entrepreneurs with promising ideas and technologies for the Asian market. It is also an investment partner for investors looking to invest in Asian market. Prior to Asia Evolution, Mr. Park was an Executive Director of Investment Banking at Goldman, Sachs & Co. He also served as the Chief Representative and CFO for NewTel Limited, an entity established by Goldman Sachs Capital Partners to invest and actively manage Vietnam’s telecom sector. Mr. John Park received his M.B.A from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and a B.A. with honors (magna cum laude) from Brown University in Economics and International Relations.
